Season’s Scents
Evolving a Timeless Design
The Project: Evolving Season’s Scents
Design is a delicate interplay of constancy and change. While some designs endure, beloved precisely for their timelessness, others require periodic reinvention to remain relevant in an ever-evolving world. Season’s Scents, a private label range developed for Long Barn, illustrates the art of evolution in design—where innovation meets reverence for the past.
Initially launched in 2019, Season’s Scents reflected Laura Brown’s sensitivity to craft and nature. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, the packaging combined a soft, seasonal colour palette with delicate watercolour illustrations, exuding a clean, feminine aesthetic. This design quickly resonated with visitors, its understated charm speaking to Long Barn’s ethos of quiet elegance and deep connection to nature.
By 2021, however, the dynamics of the retail landscape had shifted. As bolder, more audacious designs began to dominate the shelves, the need for a redesign became apparent. The challenge was clear: to reinvigorate the range without compromising its established identity or alienating its loyal customer base.
The Redesign: Honouring Heritage, Embracing Change
The 2021 redesign of Season’s Scents struck a delicate balance between respect for the original and a bold step forward. The watercolour illustrations, integral to the range’s identity, were transformed into screen-printed motifs. This reimagining introduced a new textural dimension while retaining the fluid, organic quality that made the originals distinctive. The result was a more graphic, contemporary presence that stood out in increasingly competitive retail environments.
The seasonal colour palette, another range signature, was subtly recalibrated. Richer tones and modern hues were introduced to heighten the visual impact, yet the palette retained its ties to nature, ensuring the range remained rooted in its origins.
The Process: Strategic Craftsmanship
Every detail of the redesign reflected a dual commitment to creativity and strategy. Each fragrance was treated as a distinct entity within the collection, with tailored visual elements ensuring individuality while maintaining cohesion. Laura’s approach blended intuitive artistry with analytical precision, safeguarding brand recognition while introducing enough change to breathe new life into the range.
This strategic evolution extended to production and presentation. Coordinated production ensured a seamless transition from concept to completion, while thoughtfully styled photography captured the renewed identity of Season’s Scents, translating its allure across physical and digital platforms.
The Outcome: A Renewed Legacy
The refreshed Season’s Scents range achieved what the best redesigns aspire to: it bridged the past and the future. The collection retained the qualities that had made it beloved while commanding fresh attention in a crowded market.
As Laura Brown reflects, “The most successful redesigns don’t discard the past—they build upon it. With Season’s Scents, our aim was to honour the essence of the original while introducing a sense of renewal. By adapting the illustrations and palette, we created a timeless yet undeniably contemporary design, ensuring the range continues to resonate.”
Season’s Scents stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful evolution in design: a reinvention that enriches rather than erases, celebrates rather than competes, and endures while embracing change.
